Forestry & Remote Sensing

We are one of Germany’s leading value-adding companies in earth observation, located near Munich. Our services range from satellite image analyses using highly automated workflows to spatiotemporal data analyses using geographic information systems (GIS). RSS is involved in various Copernicus and R&D projects that address highly topical issues such as climate change, deforestation of tropical rainforests, biodiversity and nature conservation.

Job description

The successful candidate will conduct multitemporal analyses on satellite imagery to assess anthropogenic impacts on forest ecosystems across the tropics. Experience with Landsat, Sentinel, or other high-resolution satellite imagery is required, along with a strong background in scripting languages such as Python, R and ArcGIS. Experience in managing large geospatial data sets and machine learning is desired.

The candidate will work in both a scientific and commercial environment, in close collaboration with an experienced team. The position also entails the management and execution of field/ forest inventories, the presentation of project results at meetings, national and international conferences, and composition of peer-reviewed publications.


We are looking for a candidate with an MSc degree or equivalent in forestry, geoinformatics or environmental sciences. A sound background in forestry, remote sensing, image processing and classification using eCognition, as well as a solid understanding of ecosystem processes is mandatory. Previous experience with SAR remote sensing and programming is an asset, while strong written and oral communication skills are expected.

Work Experience for University Students

Our internships offer a practical way to gain new experience and insights. Interns can expect to become familiar with modern image processing and classification techniques while navigating useful programs such as ArcMap, eCognition and ENVI. Generally, internships span three months, but they can also be longer (e.g. in the case of mandatory 6 month praktikums required for university credit) or shorter (2 months minimum). Please note that students must be enrolled in a university program to apply.
